The Great Pretender
(Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature;
the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
2 Corinthians 5:17)

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Pretending that I'm doing well
I bow my head
But my spirit is dead
I'm phony, but no one can tell
Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Sometimes I fool even myself
I play the game
But to my real shame
My Bible just stays on the shelf

Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real, when I feel what my heart can't conceal

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
I know when to say, "Praise the Lord"
I grace this pew
In a suit that's brand new
I tithe all that I can afford
It's got to look good to the board

Perhaps you have heard me quote John 3:16
But deep in my heart I don't know what it means

Oh yes, I'm the great pretender
Outside, I look perfectly whole
I seem to be
What I'm not, you see
I know there'll be peace in my soul
If I just let God have control
Have control

Oh Lord, its us again.
Finding humor in this song meant to reveal something that is not funny.
The life of someone who is entrenched in religion, but has no relationship with You.
Someone who goes through the motions and rituals, but inside they are still dead.
You addressed this several times when You were here in the flesh.
You called the Pharisees, the religious teachers of the day, 'white-washed' tombs.
All clean on the outside and full of death and decay on the inside.
You told us that many will come before You in the day of judgement
and claim that they had done many religious things in Your name and yet
You will tell them, "Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.
I never knew you!"  Oh, please, open the eyes of any who read these
words today so that they see that they are just going through the act.
You have never wanted sacrifices and burnt offerings,
You've always wanted our hearts.  Reach down to those who are
pretending and give them the faith they need to enter into a true love
relationship with the Most High God!  In that they will be given new life
and an eternal home with You!  This is our prayer this morning, Jesus,
that new souls would be added to Your kingdom today, even as we pray
in Your beautiful name.  Amen.
